ART 3

This class is for students who have successfully completed Art 2, based on their portfolio assessment and in-class performance throughout the prior school year. The course of study includes:

  • Advanced Drawing–Students continue to work out problems of plausible figure drawing within one-, two-, and three-point perspective settings, as well as consistency of technique within a single image.
  • Fundamentals of Composition and Design–Students learn about symmetrical and asymmetrical balance, positive and negative space, the focus area of each picture, how to lead the viewer’s eye throughout the entire image, seven basic elements of design and three applications for each of them and much more.
  • Advanced Watercolor Techniques–Students employ diverse techniques such as painting in glazes, alla prima, underpainting, pointillism, etc.
  • Sculpture–Students draw a subject from at least three different angles, getting a good sense of its volume, then using wire armature, prepare a “skeleton” upon which they use artists’ clay, shaping it into a believable likeness of the given subject.

Students compile a portfolio throughout the year, which is the basis for instructor evaluation. Students should anticipate 45 minutes of preparation for every 45 minutes of class. Minimum class enrollment for Art 3 is 6 students. Maximum class enrollment for Art 3 is 15 students
