MUSIC THEORY
Music Theory is a two-year curriculum that rotates every year. It is open to students 11 years of age or older who have successfully completed Level 2 on their primary instrument and who have the approval of the Director. This class meets weekly.
Through this class, students gain an understanding of basic music theory beginning with major and minor scales and circle of fifths. Students learn sight singing, rhythmic dictation, and elementary harmony. Students are expected to create a portfolio of their work, which is used to assess progress. Students should provide an IBM-formatted diskette for this purpose.
To complete Music Theory 2, students must write an original melody and harmonize it for four-part choir. Students should anticipate 45 minutes of preparation for each 45-minute class. Music Theory 1 will be offered this year.
